Predator, The Original Classic

Back in 1987, The Predator movie, directed by John McTiernan ,was to be introduced to the world, and was an instant hit. Starring a lot of boy-hood heroes like Carl Weathers, WWF favorite Jesse Ventura and the late Kevin Peter Hall (who played the Predator) it was pure testosterone at its best.

But it would not been as big with out the biggest action hero of the 80′s, the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger, who at the time, was making cracking action filled movies, and playing the role of “Dutch,” made this a memorable, cult classic.

Most of us know the original movie plot, an elite special forces team are sent in to the jungle to rescue some hostages but end up been hunted by a technologically advanced form of extraterrestrial life, the one and only Predator. Pure kaos could only enfold, much to the enjoyment of movie goers.

But What Was This Predator?

The Predator is a member of a warrior race which likes to hunt members of other species for sport, who are strong enough to compete, uses active camouflage, a plasma weapon and can see the infrared spectrum. It is also a skull trophy hunter.

The Predator was created by brothers Jim and John Thomas and designed by special effect artist Stan Winston. The Predator suit went through a lot of designs until the final design came about, due to the changing of Predator Actors.

A crazy Fact

As we were saying, the suit had to be tailored to fit, who ever was portraying the Predator. This happened to be, none other than Jean Claude Van Damme, due to the monster needing to be agile and extremely fit and strong. But, due to the physical size of Schwarzenegger, Weathers and Ventura, and the alleged accusation that Van Damme intentionally injured a stunt man, he was removed from the movie and replaced by 7ft 2 mime artist Kevin Peter Hall, now that’s Hollywood film legend at its best.

This movie is a favorite and in my top 10. In 1990, Predator 2 followed starring Danny Glover and again Kevin Peter Hall as The Predator. In 2004 the birth of “The Alien vs Predator” Franchise was born and was a commercial success, and was followed by “Alien vs Predator: Requiem” in 2007.

In 2010, another movie was made simply called ” Predators” and produced by the cool Robert Rodriguez, who wanted it to be a sort of sequel to the original and distance itself from Predator 2 and the Alien vs Predator Movies. To me, it is the actual real Predator 2, and is pure testosterone action filled mayhem and very enjoyable.
